East St. Louis headed to state title game

The Flyers will play for the title on Saturday, but their opponent will be decided by a courtroom

The East St. Louis Flyers are one win away from their second state championship under head coach Darren Sunkett. The Flyers defeated Benet Academy 20-0 last Saturday to earn a trip to the title game.

The question is, who will they play? Plainfield North defeated Fenwick 18-17 in overtime to advance, but there is a twist. The officials, incorrectly, awarded Plainfield an untimed down at the end of regulation and Plainfield tied the game and eventually won.

On Tuesday, Fenwick filed a motion in Cook County court asking for the outcome to be overturned and thus Fenwick be awared the victory and a spot in the Class 7A title game.

The Flyers do not know yet who they will play, but are confident nonetheless. The Flyers are a perfect 13-0 on the season and could finish as Sunkett's first ever undefeated team.
