Summit tops Lafayette for Wickenheiser Cup championship

It is time to party at Rockwood Summit. The Falcons defeated rival Lafayette 5-2 on Monday to bring home the Wickenheiser Cup.

No one had to wait very long for some excitement, just 21 seconds in, Lafayette's Kyle Estes got a putback goal to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

That lead would evaporate with just about seven minutes to go in the period. Cole Petersen scored on a delayed penalty to even the game at a goal apiece. About four minutes later, Petersen took a shot from the point that was redirected by D'Shea Mullaney in to the net to give Summit a 2-1 lead. Not even a minute late, and on the power play, Devin Mayer scored an odd angled goal to stretch it to 3-1.

With just over a minute left in the 1st, Jared Preete got some of the momentum back for Lafayette as he went top shelf to cut the Summit lead to 3-2 after one period of play.

In the second period, the combo of Petersen and Mullaney went to work again. This time it was Mullaney with a pretty cross ice pass to Petersen, who netted his second goal of the game to make it 4-2.

Any real hope the Lancers had of getting back in it came to a halt with a costly turnover in their own end. Mayer had a wide open net and had no problem stretching the lead to 5-2. James Smith made a couple of big saves for the Falcons to keep the Lancers at a distance.

Summit entered the tournament as the 16 seed.
