Miracle Field to open in Fairview Heights

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KSDK) – When it comes to baseball, one group has literally leveled the playing field.

The Fairview Heights Miracle League opens Thursday for children and adults with special needs. This is no ordinary baseball field.

The bases, the turf and even the pitcher's mound are all level to accommodate wheel chairs and walkers.

There's also a sophisticated drainage system that allows the field to dry immediately after it rains. This is the sister facility to the Chesterfield Miracle League, started by Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.

"I think a lot of times you just go and watch people play without the high expectations," Matheny said. "Just playing to enjoy the game, go watch at one these handicap-accessible fields.

The field isn't just for kids.

Miracle League members range from three to 65 years old.
