The Cardinals will start their 2017 season at home with a matchup against the Chicago Cubs on April 3. It will be the first season opener between the two teams since 2000.
The Atlanta Braves will open SunTrust Field, their $1.1 billion home in suburban Cobb County, on April 14, 2017 against the San Diego Padres, Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday.
The 2017 season will begin for the second consecutive year with a Sunday tripleheader, as the New York Yankees will play at the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Arizona Diamondbacks will play host to the San Francisco Giants on April 2. A third game, yet to be announced, will be moved to the Sunday night slot.
The final day of the regular season will be Sunday, Oct. 1. Should the 2017 postseason schedule mirror those of recent years, that would place Game 1 of the World Series on Oct. 24, with a possible Game 7 on Nov. 1.
The third game for the opening tripleheader will come from the pool of openers on Monday, April 3:
- Miami at Washington
- Atlanta at New York Mets
- Colorado at Milwaukee
- San Diego at Los Angeles Dodgers
- Pittsburgh at Boston
- Toronto at Baltimore
- Cleveland at Texas
- Detroit at Chicago White Sox
- Kansas City at Minnesota
- Chicago Cubs at St. Louis
- Philadelphia at Cincinnati
- Los Angeles Angels at Oakland
- Seattle at Houston
The Pittsburgh Pirates (vs. Atlanta), Detroit Tigers (vs. Boston), Colorado Rockies (vs. the Dodgers), Philadelphia Phillies (vs. Washington), San Diego Padres (vs. the Giants), Texas Rangers (vs. Oakland) and Los Angeles Angels (vs. Seattle) will play home openers on Friday, April 7:
The Yankees, Kansas City, San Francisco, Cleveland and the Chicago Cubs follow suit on Monday, April 10, while Toronto and Miami open at home on Tuesday, April 11.
That leaves the Braves to christen SunTrust Park, starting a seven-game homestand that will also welcome the Washington Nationals. The Braves will play an exhibition game at SunTrust on March 31 against the New York Yankees.
The All-Star Game will be at Miami's Marlins Park on July 11.
