Report: Wayne Gretzky wants NHL team

"The Great One" wants to own an NHL team in Seattle.

The New York Post, citing sources, reports Wayne Gretzky has joined a group of investors hoping to make it happen. The report says it's not clear if the group, or two other groups looking to do the same thing, are pursuing an expansion team or want to move an existing team.

Gretzky's agent, Darren Blake, denied the report to The Canadian Press

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has not publicly signed off on expanding the league, but has expressed interest in having a team in Seattle.

Bettman visited Seattle in May to meet with Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and King County Executive Dow Constantine to get a status on a new arena.

Investor Chris Hansen has agreed to partially fund a new NBA and NHL complex, which is currently undergoing an environmental review. The Memorandum of Understanding, approved by the Seattle City and King County councils, allows construction to begin after the environmental review is complete and an NBA team is acquired. City leaders and Hansen have indicated they are not willing right now to renegotiate the deal to allow an NHL team to prompt construction.
