Local athlete competing in Paralympic Games

ST. LOUIS COUNTY – He was diagnosed with cancer at 3-years-old and had his leg amputated, but one St. Louis athlete is heading to Sochi despite it all.

Steve Cash is the goalie for Team USA's sled hockey team. The Overland native is competing in the Paralympic Winter Games next month in Sochi.

At the Vancouver games in 2010, Cash didn't allow a single goal during the tournament, and Team USA took home the gold. Cash is ready for a repeat.

"Teams are going to be gunning for us and obviously they want to be one of those top teams on the podium just like we do," he said.

Cash's parents will travel to Sochi after supporters in Overland held a trivia night fundraiser to help pay for their travel expenses.

You can see more of Steve Cash and his teammates in a PBS documentary called "Ice Warriors," airing Feb. 26 at 10 p.m. on KETC.
