New York, NY (Sports Network) - Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera
has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period
ending April 8.
Cabrera led the AL with three home runs during the season's opening weekend
and batted .455 (5-for-11) with eight runs batted in to secure his ninth
career Player of the Week honor.
The Venezuelan slugger recorded his first regular season multi-homer game
since June 29, 2011 on Saturday in a 10-0 rout of the Boston Red Sox.
Cabrera's first blast gave the defending AL Central Division champs their
first homer of the year and his second came at the front-end of back-to-back
solo home runs with new teammate Prince Fielder.
The 10-year veteran also recorded a five RBI game on Sunday, when he lifted a
three-run blast in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Tigers to a
13-12 victory in 11 innings and the club's first 3-0 start since 2006, when
they went on to reach the World Series.
Other notable performances included Cabrera's teammates Alex Avila, Justin
Verlander and Fielder, Baltimore Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis, Tampa
Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena and right-hander Jered Weaver of the Los
Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
