Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Umpire Jerry Layne will miss the remainder
of the weekend series between the Minnesota Twins and Cincinnati Reds after
being struck in the side of the head with the barrel of a broken bat during
Friday's game.
Layne was behind the plate when Cincinnati's Devin Mesoraco grounded out for
the second out of the fourth inning. Mesoraco's bat splintered and the barrel
struck Layne on the left side of his head.
After remaining on the ground for several minutes, Layne left the field under
his own power. He was taken to a Cincinnati hospital for tests, which director
of Major League Baseball umpires Randy Marsh said were normal.
Mark Lollo will take Layne's place on the crew for the remainder of the
series.
