Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox recalled pitcher Daniel Bard
from Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.
Bard has endured a difficult transition from the bullpen to the starting
rotation this season. In 11 games -- 10 starts -- he has posted a 5-6 record
with a career-worst 5.24 ERA.
Before this season, Bard operated exclusively out of Boston's bullpen since
joining the team in 2009. Last year, he posted a 3.33 ERA in 70 relief
appearances.
Boston optioned pitcher Zach Stewart to Pawtucket to make room for Bard on the
roster. The 25-year-old, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox along
with Brent Lillibridge on June 24 in exchange for Kevin Youkilis and cash, was
rocked in his Red Sox debut on Wednesday. He allowed nine runs on 10 hits in
three innings.
