'Santo Cardinal' good luck charm for Cards

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - There's a special good luck charm that's been inside Busch Stadium for the last three playoff runs.

Ballpark employee Vicky Mathews and her sisters created the Santo Cardinal in 2011 They call it the patron saint of the Cardinals.

The wood figure is adorned in rally beads, and other symbols including "milagros" or little miracles, representing strong arms, strong hearts, strong eyes and strong legs. Mathews hopes the Santo continues to bring the Red Birds good luck.

"Our family went thru a lot of trials during 2011, and we had an antique statue around and for some reason we were just driven to create a cardinal figure," she said.

But the Santo Cardinal will not be at Busch Stadium next year. Vicky and her co-workers' positions in the cash room are being phased out.

The Santo will stay at Vicky's home in St. Louis.
