U.S. defeats Russia for Paralympic Sled Hockey gold

(KSDK Sports) -- A goal with just over 5 minutes remaining in the second period proved to be enough as the U.S. defeated Russia 1-0 to earn the gold medal in Paralympic Sled Hockey. The Americans became the first team in Paralympic history to win the gold in back to back games. Russia took the silver, with Canada earning bronze.

The winning goal came off the stick of Josh Sweeney, who broke free on a breakaway to give the Americans the lead. American goalie and St. Louisan Steve Cash made the goal stand by defending against two Russian power play chances.

Cash is a two-time world champion and a Paralympics gold medalist from the 2010 Vancouver games. He was also the MVP of during the Vancouver Paralympic games.

Cash was also named as the United States flag bearer in the Closing Ceremonies, which are Sunday.
