ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Firefighters were able to protect a bedridden elderly man while extinguishing a fire that erupted early Saturday morning on the third floor of a brick building on Parkland Place.

The call came at 2:53 p.m. When firefighters got inside the home, they found an elderly man who was stuck in a mechanical bed. Deciding that it would be safer to protect him than carry him out, one firefighter stayed with him and the rest knocked out the small fire that was burning upstairs within 10 minutes.

Just the corner window and some of the ceiling sustained damage. The cause has not yet been determined.

No additional information was immediately available.
