USA TODAY - Apple announced the upgraded iPad mini tablet that boasts the sharper Retina display of its larger brethren is now available.
The device features a 7.9-inch screen with 2048 x 1536 resolution. It starts at $399 for the 16 GB model, and is available in white or space gray.
The revamped mini is one of two iPads launched by Apple this month. Earlier, Apple released the iPad Air with a thinner, lighter body and beefed-up processing chip.
"The response to iPad Air has been incredible, and we're excited for customers to experience the new iPad mini with Retina display," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of marketing, in a statement.
The new tablets arrive as Apple continues to cede market share in the space. Although Apple remains the leader with a nearly 30% share of the global market based on shipments, it's down from the 40% it held during the same time last year, says IDC. Meanwhile, rival Samsung continues to gain ground, with 20% of the market.
