After the huge success of last week's The Sound of Music, NBC has committed to at least another live musical event for next holiday season, and one leading candidate is Peter Pan.
Music, a three-hour event that drew 18.6 million viewers Thursday, drew largely negative reviews after it aired, due more to star Carrie Underwood's acting skills than to the music itself.
But the audience came, and its status as a live event made it a social-media hit. On Twitter alone, it drew 450,000 tweets Thursday, reaching an audience of 5.3 million, making it TV's top non-sports Twitter draw last week, says Nielsen SocialGuide.
Music was originally developed by ABC, which is said to have passed due to the show's high cost, well over $12 million. Now, NBC and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who were also behind the network's failed Broadway-musical series Smash, are aiming to repeat the process next holiday season.
Though no project has been formally chosen, Zadan and Meron have been keen to mount a new production of Peter Pan, which aired on the network in a different version in 1955 and 1960, starring Mary Martin.
"All weekend, people have been calling us and e-mailing us," NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt told the New York Times. "Rights holders of musicals have said, 'Please do one of our shows.' We're excited to try it again."
