RIO DE JANEIRO – A planned protest of half-nude women drew a swarm of press and on-lookers, but few demonstrators.
The demonstrators were protesting a historic ban on topless sunbathing on Ipanema Beach. The ban carries the threat of a fine and up to one year in prison.
Over 4,000 women had confirmed attendance through social media for the protest known as "Toplessaço." The demonstration, which was held on the first day of Brazil's summer, appeared to suffer from a lack of organization, with only about a dozen demonstrators daring to remove their bikini tops.
Local police did not intervene and no protesters were arrested.
