COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - It is back-breaking work most people would rather avoid, but not Freddie Novosel.

"You got to do what you got to do, I've got fans who are expecting something especially with this big of a snow," Novosel said.

Since 1988 or 89, he's been building more than Frosty.

"Is that better than your typical snowman?" NewsChannel 5's Heidi Glaus asked.

"Yeah, because it's not normal," one little girl said.

Not normal for a couple of reasons. For one, this isn't snowman-building snow.

"Everybody says do you have a plan, do you have a plan, I said have no fear, water is here," Novosel said.

So he added water to the mix, one bucket at a time.

"It was so cold, I'd wet it down and have five minutes to work with it and then it was solid ice. So not as much detail in these last few," Novosel said.

He not only created a couple of Smurfs in his front yard, but a giant fish for this past weekend's "Let's Go Fishing Show" at the Gateway Center in Collinsville.

"Are you trying to compete with Freddie down there?" Heidi asked neighbor Velma Garcia while she shoveled snow.

"Uh no, actually trying to dig myself out to go to work," Garcia said.

So while the rest of us do what we have to do, so does Freddie Novosel, the difference is his work seems to stop traffic. The rest of us work to get it moving.
