KSDK - A 39-year-old Englishwoman was overcome with emotion after being able to hear for the first time thanks to modern medical technology.

Joanne Milne was born with Usher Syndrome, a genetic disorder combining deafness and blindness. She'd been mostly deaf since birth and lost her sight in her mid-20s. There is no known cure for the disorder.

Milne was fitted with a pair of cochlear implants last month, but had to wait nearly a month before they could be switched on. She went with her mother to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England to have the devices activated.

The video begins just after the hearing devices were turned on and the attending nurse starts saying the days of the week.
