KSDK - May 6 (this coming Tuesday) is National Teacher Day. In honor of the occasion, we put together this list of fictional teachers that have touched our hearts and inspired us.
Of course, as great as the economics teacher in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" was (no idea who we're talking about? Bueller? Bueller?), there's no one as inspirational as the amazing real-life teachers in our community. Tell us about your favorite teacher and using a photo on our Facebook page and we'll highlight them online and on-air at NewsChannel 5!
Check out 12 great fictional teachers below:
12. Ms. Frizzle, the Magic School Bus series
We've all got that one teacher. The one with the crazy red hair who took you on field trips to places like the human digestion system and the freakin' moon inside of a school bus with a dubious safety record. Should Ms. Frizzle have a teaching license? Meh…maybe not, but she was certainly memorable and enthusiastic about her job.
11. Ms. Norbury, "Mean Girls"
Like pretty much everyone else, she has been personally victimized by Regina George, but between her genuine patience for Lindsey Lohan's character, the fact that she works as a bartender in a mall and her confession that she takes off her wig when drunk, she's a teacher you'd actually want to eat lunch with.
10. Dewey Finn, "School of Rock"
This washed-out wannabe rock star may have only pretended to be a certified substitute teacher at an expensive private school, but he helped introduce a new generation to Led Zeppelin. That definitely warrants inclusion on this list.
9. Mr. Hand, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"
Sure, he might have totally harshed stoner Spicoli's mellow by giving away his pizza, but he also went to his house after school to help him make up for all the time he's wasted. That's commitment.
8. Indiana Jones
It would certainly be distracting to have Harrison Ford at his prime as your teacher, but you've got to admit the dude has a lot of real world knowledge about archaeology (he's seen someone's heart get ripped out, for goodness sake!). The only downside? It doesn't look like he spends that much time in class.
7. Mr. Miyagi, "The Karate Kid"
Through a combination of "waxing on" and "waxing off," this sagely mentor helped a bullied teenager realize his martial arts dreams and defeat the Cobra Kai along the way with the mystical crane kick.
6. Mr. Holland, "Mr. Holland's Opus"
For 30 years, Mr. Holland was pretty much the best music teacher ever. And if the final performance at the end of this heart-tugging movie doesn't make you cry, then nothing will.
5. Charles Xavier, X-Men
Professor X gave mutant kids a place where they could be themselves in a world where no one accepts them. Now how's that for an amazing teacher?
4. Albus Dumbledore
With wise words like "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities," Albus Dumbledore proved that he is the wisest wizard in the history of Hogwarts.
3. Economics Teacher, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"
"Anyone, anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?"
2. Mr. Keating, "Dead Poets Society"
From ripping the pages out of his students' textbooks to the moving scene where they recited "Oh Captain, my Captain," Mr. Keating is something every teacher should aspire to be.
1. Mr. Feeny, "Boy Meets World"
He's not just a teacher. He's a next door neighbor, a friend, college professor and a pseudo father for Cory, Topanga, Shawn and Eric.
