KREM 2's Mike Gonzalez interviewed Kathy Southern in April when her pit bull attacked an eight-year-old girl.

The little girl received more than 100 stitches as a result of the attack. Officers said two neighbors, who were attempting to help the girl, were also attacked. Southern was not home at the time. She spoke with KREM 2 News on the evening of the attack. She claimed the attack was not from negligence, but that the neighborhood kids had opened the gate to her yard.

On KREM 2 News at 11 p.m. on the day of the attack, viewers noticed an extra voice at the end of Mike Gonzalez's live report of the dog attack. The owner of the dog had appeared unexpectedly to talk to our crew. KREM 2 News later published the behind the scenes footage of what led up to that on-camera situation. The behind the scenes footage is what aired on The Soup in May.

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service later deemed Southern's two dogs were dangerous.

Southern was charged with two misdemeanors according to SCRAPS leaders. Criminal misdemeanor charges carry a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and 90 days confinement.
