Duchess Kate is the new phone-hacking-victim poster girl — with a record 155 hacks.
The former Kate Middleton didn't know it, but snoopy British journalists were hacking her cellphone for years before she married Prince William in 2011.
Coupled with the publication of embarrassing topless pictures of her snapped by paparazzi in 2012, this news raises questions about whether the world's favorite middle-class princess fully reckoned with the price of life in the royal family.
The news came out today in testimony in the ongoing London trial of journalists for phone-hacking famous folk. For the first time, it was revealed that Middleton was hacked a shocking 155 times by a now defunct News of the World royal editor.
By contrast, Will's phone was hacked 35 times and Prince Harry's nine times, by Clive Goodman, one of seven defendants on trial for illegally messing with celebrities' voicemail.
Why Kate and why more than five years before the wedding? Goodman testified journalists already saw her as fair game.
"There were discussions about her and Prince William marrying, moving in, settling down. She started to receive semi-royal status and things were moving on."
Welcome to the royal family, Kate.
