In the penultimate episode, the wildlings are readying an attack on the Night's Watch.
Before the fighting begins, Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly share a conversation about love and sex. Sam asks Snow what it is like to be intimate with a woman. He wants the details.
Snow responds, "There's this person, this whole other person. You're wrapped up in them. They're wrapped up in you. For a little while, you're more than just you. Well, I don't know, I'm not a bleedin' poet."
He then remembers his last encounter with Ygritte, "What did I get for it? An arrow 6 inches from my heart."
Sam is reunited with Gilly and her baby in this episode. He vows to keep her safe from harm, hiding her as he makes his way to fight alongside his brothers.
The battle is an amazing spectacle. Mance Rayder lights a massive fire to signal the beginning of an attack. A group of wildlings start their assault from the southern gate while giants are seen riding mammoths toward Castle Black from the opposite side.
The action is impressive with flaming arrows and barrels flying, carnage galore and invaders attempting to scale the icy Wall. Giants also use a mammoth to try to lift the door that leads to the tunnel under the Wall.
In a scene showing solidarity, members of the Night's Watch defiantly recite their vows as an angry giant approaches them inside the tunnel.
The most heart-wrenching encounter is when Ygritte meets Snow again.
She had previously told her crew that he was hers to kill. But upon seeing him, she hesitates to deliver a final blow with an arrow. Snow smiles at her. Suddenly, she's shot with an arrow from the back.
Snow rushes to her side and holds her in his arms until she dies. "Jon Snow, do you remember that cave," Ygritte says. "We should have stayed in that cave." Snow answers, "We'll go back there."
Her last words, "You know nothing, Jon Snow."
So, the Night's Watch successfully defends the wall for one night and Tormund Giantsbane is taken as a prisoner.
The next day, Snow tells Sam he's going in search of Mance to kill him. Sam objects wildly, telling Snow that they'll torture him.
"You're right. It's a bad plan. What's your plan?" Snow says.
