ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – There's no better mascot for keeping our environment litter-free than Peanut, a red-eared slider turtle.

Her species is found in or near rivers, lakes and ponds across the region. It's what happened to Peanut when she was young that made her so special.

When she was a baby, she crawled in the plastic rings used to hold a six-pack of soda. It got stuck, and her shell grew around it.

Learn more about peanut in the video above.
