ST. LOUIS – There's a new kangaroo joey showing his face at the Saint Louis Zoo!
Rocket, a Matschie's tree 'roo, was the size of a lima bean when he was born six months ago and hopped into his moms pouch to take some time to develop.
Now the size of a small cat, Rocket is starting to pop out of the pouch to go exploring. In about four months he'll move out, but continue nursing for an additional six months.
Rocket has five siblings, and is the fifth tree kangaroo to be born at the Saint Louis Zoo. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan played matchmaker for his parents, Kasbeth and Iri.
The reddish-brown and cream Matschie's tree kangaroos are only found in the forests of Papua New Guinea. They can jump up to 30 feet form a tree to the ground.
