St. Louis (KSDK)-- An off-duty St. Louis police officer is charged with DWI and assault.27-year-old Michael Schinnerisaccused of driving the wrong way down a south city street and crashing into a police vehicle injuring the officer inside.

The accident happened around 2:15 a.m. Saturday on Detonty Street near Tower Grove Avenue. The officer inside the unmarked police vehicle was taken to the hospital with hip and leg injuries. A passenger inside Schinner's car was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Schinner suffered minor injuries.

Schinner ischarged with2nd Degree Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, 2nd Degree Assault and Driving While Intoxicated.He'sbeen suspended from the police department. Schinner was named District 8's officer of the month in May 2010 while he was a probationary officer. An internal affairs investigation is underway.
