Union, Mo (KSDK) -- A 39-year-old Pacific man stabbed his girlfriend, dismembered her body and dumped her body in a trash bin and covered it in ice.

A jury found Vernell Loggins Jr, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Stephanie Fields in 2009.

Maintenance workers found Fields' body and then the Missouri State Water Patrol and members of the Major Case Squad found body parts along the Meramec River, down river from the I-44 Bridge at Times Beach, according to the Franklin County prosecutor's office.

The sentencing phase for Loggins is under way.
