Union Township, PA (WICU/CNN) - An off-duty Pennsylvania State Trooper is accused of killing a man in a drunken driving crash.

Jeffrey Dalessandro, 35, was released from jail Thursday after posting bond.

Authorities say the trooper was drunk Wednesday night, when he crossed into oncoming traffic on this road, hitting an SUV head on. Daryl Nunemaker, 21, died at the scene.

A spokesperson for the victim's family says they are trying to cope with the tragedy.

"Yes, they do. The Nunemaker family appreciates all of the thoughts and prayers that are being offered by their friends, family and their community. Clearly they are shocked and saddened by the loss of their son, DJ. At this time, the Nunemaker's are asking that everyone respect their privacy while they are dealing with this senseless tragedy," said Timothy Wachter.

Dalessandro is a nine-year veteran of the force.

State police say he was driving his own car at the time of the crash.

Dalessandro's been suspended without pay and charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence.
