St. Louis (KSDK) -- City of St. Louis residents can sign up for a free service that will alert them via text message or email about emergencies.

The City of St. Louis Emergency Management Agency (CEMA)will issue the free alerts.

"The City is constantly looking to improve policy and procedures to ensure that residents and visitors are safe during any emergency situation that could occur in the City of St. Louis," said CEMA Director Gary Christmann. "Nixle provides immediate, important information directly to citizens' cell phones. This important tool has already proved to be a lifesaver in other cities, and I'm confident that it can help to improve public safety in the case of an emergency in St. Louis."
