Edwardsville, Ill (KSDK) - Two SIUE students critically injured in a fire at their Edwardsville apartment died from their injuries.

Fire Chief R.W. Welle said Lauren Petersen, 19, died at 8:30 at St. Luke's Hospital at 8:30 a.m. Monday. Earlier in the morning. Lacy V. Siddall, 21, died at an area hospital. No arrangements for the students have been announced.

The fire happened at Siddall and Petersen's off-campus apartment in the 600 block of Hillsboro Avenue. They were living in an older two-story home that had been renovated for apartments.

Just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday, a neighbor saw the fire and called 911. Firefighters arrived and saw smoke coming from the second floor.

Firefighters found Siddall and Petersen inside and rescued them. Both were transported to Anderson Hospital in Maryville then airlifted to St. Louis hospitals.

After rescuing the victims, firefighters extinguished the fire. Fire officials do not think the fire is suspicious and believe it to be accidental.

Although an official cause has not been determined, investigators say the fire started near a power strip with a laptop computer and other electrical devices plugged into it.

A Bethalto parent who showed up at the scene of the fire Sunday evening said the two women attendedCivic Memorial High School together before they became students at SIUE.

A prayer service for Siddall and Petersen will take place on SIUE campus Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
