St. Louis (KSDK) -- There are currently two anti-bullying laws on the books in Missouri and three in Illinois.
In Illinois, state law bans bullying in schools and at school functions. Schools are required to have anti-bullying policies in place and must update them every two years.
Cyber bullying is also illegal in Illinois schools.
Punishment is decided at the district level and can range from verbal reprimand to expulsion.
In Missouri, schoolshave beenrequired to have anti-bullying policies and to report any instances since 2007. Teachers are also required to discourage bullying of students with disabilities.
Missouri does not have cyber bullying laws.
Missouri Representative Sue Allen is leading the charge to strengthen anti-bullying laws in the state. Rep. Allen said the new law would mean greater protection for all students.
