St. Louis (KSDK) - A Washington University student diagnosed with bacterial meningitis has died.
Washington University Chancellor Mark Wrighton says undergraduate student Emily Benatar passed away at Barnes-Jewish Hospital early Wednesday morning.
Her family was with her when she died.
Wrighton says Benatar was a first-year student from California and was enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Meningococcal bacteria are transmitted from person to person through droplets of respiratory or throat secretions, such as through kissing, sneezing and coughing on someone, or sharing food or drink.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 19th at 7 p.m. at Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills, California.
