St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Officers with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department are investigating a crash involving a Caseyville, Illinois police officer.

The accident occurred before 12 p.m. at Madison and 10th streets in Old North St. Louis, beneath the train trestle.

The officer has been identified as 38-year-old Jeff Wilkinson. He has been on the force for 12 years. He was previously a K9 officer.

According to Lt. Moore, a spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, Wilkinson was involved in a pursuit of suspected who robbed The Buckle inside St. Clair Square shopping mall. The officer's vehiclestruckthe civlian vehicle, knocking it into a train trestle pillar.

He had to be extricated from the car and was taken to Saint Louis University Hospital.

Laura Keller, a spokesperson for SLU Hospital, Wilkinson is in fair condition and is with his family.

The person in the civilian vehicle involved in the accident was not seriously injured, Moore said.

Lt. Stephen R. Evans with the Fairview Heights Police Department released additional information regarding the robbery of The Buckle.

Evans says around 11:38 a.m. two suspects entered the store and each grabbed an armful of jeans and ran. It is believed they left with between 15 and 20 pairs of jeans and capri pants.

A Buckle employee chased the suspects out of the mall and watched them enter an early 2000s style white two-door Chevrolet Monte Carlo. There was not any visible registration.

The car drove northbound on Illinois Route 159.

The first suspect is described as a black male, around 5'8" tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing sunglasses, a white baseball hat, white short-sleeve t-shirt with an Adidas logo, white tennis shoes and dark denim shorts.

The second suspect is described as a black male around 6' tall with a thin to medium build. He was last seen wearing sunglasses, a black baseball hat with a white logo, white short sleeved shirt, blue jeans and dark colored shoes.

A third suspect stayed in the getaway car as the theft happened. There is no description for this person.

Shortly after the incident Wilkinson saw a vehicle that matched the description of the suspect vehicle driving westbound on Interstate 64. He was trying to catch the suspects when the crash occurred.
