St. Charles County, MO (KSDK)

- Fire and police chiefs from across St. Charles County are asking people to refrain from using fireworks in the hot and dry conditions this 4th of July -- even where fireworks are legal.

The Assistant Chief in Cottleville is urging home owners to act now to protect their homes in the event people don't head the warning.

Asst. Chief Scott Freitag says he waters his lawn more than normal leading up to the 4th and recommends the same for any mulch that is close to a home.

"We have mulch fires even when it's not this dry outside," says Freitag who counts this summer as one of the driest and most dangerous he has seen in his career.

He also says to move planters with mulch away from homes over the holiday.

Fire officials are also reminding people it's illegal to possess fireworks in O'Fallon, Wentzville, St. Peters and Lake St. Louis.
