ST. LOUIS (AP) - A veteran St. Louis television reporter has died.

Relatives and KTVI-TV say 59-year-old John Gadson died Wednesday at an assisted-living facility in St. Louis. He had brain surgery in November 2010 and never returned to the air. He also suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Gadson became a reporter for KTVI in 2000. He previously worked at stations in Greenville, Miss., Evansville, Ind., and Memphis, Tenn. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri-St. Louis with a degree in education and taught for nearly a decade at three St. Louis-area high schools before turning to broadcasting.
