Hazelwood (KSDK) - A Hazelwood resident is dead following a fire that spread through a 10 family apartment unit early Sunday morning.

The man is identified as Michael Mansfield, 48.

The Robertson Fire District responded to the 5300 block of Ville Rosa Lane and was first on the scene around 12:00 a.m. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the building filled with smoke. They learned six victims were trapped inside. As firefighters battled the blaze 5 people were rescued from the third floor of the apartment building.

Shortly after midnight a second alarm was sounded and additional firefighters responded to help extinguish the fire. The second alarm brought out 2 units from the Hazelwood Fire Department and 2 more units from Pattonville.

Battalion Chief at Robertson Fire Protection District, Dan Hoguet, told NewsChannel 5 that there is no immediate word on what sparked the fire. There was significant damage to the apartment complex and the cause of the fire is under investigation. We will bring your more information as it becomes available.
