St. Louis (KSDK) -- Local teachersare finding other ways to get the supplies they need since school budgets are tight.
Teachers are going on a website, posting the school supplies they need in their own classroom, and getting them donated.
DonorsChoose is an online charity, connecting people to classrooms in need. Public school teachers post materials on the website they need. Then, people can search for a classroom they might be interested in donating to.
When a project gets funded, materials get shipped directly to the school. More than 350 projects need funding in Missouri and 800 in Illinois.
Buder Elementary School kindergarten teacher Jennifer Cole discovered the website two years ago and says, since then, donors from around the country have provided thousands of dollars in classroom materials.
"So helpful just because I was able to get a lot of books, just things are specific to the kids, to their cultures, things like that. Last year, I was able to get instruments from around the world, I had a lot of different ethnicities in my class," said Cole.
After someone donates, they receive a thank you card from the students so they know exactly how their money helped a classroom in need. To learn more or to help classrooms in need, visit the DonorsChoose website.
