St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) is involved in a shooting investigation in south St. Louis.

The shooting occurred around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of S. Grand Boulevard and Iron Street, on border of the Holly Hills and Carondeletneighborhoods.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots. Three ambulances were seen leaving the scene.

An ATF spokeswoman said the agency was working a criminal investigation with local authorities, adding that no police officers or federal agents were harmed in the shooting.

For the last weeks, authorities have been investigating people whom the ATF said were preparing to commit an armed robbery. ATF agents went to arrest the men, but the individuals failed to comply with authorities and fled. The suspects attempted to run over ATF agents and St. Louis police officers. Fearing his safety and others, an ATF agent fired shots at the suspect vehicle, wounding two men. A third person was taken to the hospital as well for an examination, but did not appear to be wounded. One of the suspects is listed in critical conditio, while the other is expected to recover.
