St. Louis County, MO (KSDK) - Police surrounded a home in Bellefontaine Neighbors and took a man into custody, but have not confirmed whether he is the suspect in the shooting of a St. Louis police officer.

The officer is expected to recover after being shot in the arm overnight while chasing a man identified as a robbery suspect.

Around 7:45 a.m., police surrounded a home with guns drawn across the street from the Danforth Elementary School on Saint Cyr Road. Three people came out of the home. Police said they don't believe they had anything to do with the shooting.

A fourth person came out of the home. Police placed him in handcuffs and put in the back of a police car. They concluded their search of the home. Police have not said if he is the suspected shooter.

Danforth Elementary students were transported to another campus in the Riverview Gardens School District as a precaution during the manhunt. The school was given the all clear and classes were back in session by 9:40 a.m.

Investigators said the shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday while officers were responding to a business in the 8800 block of North Broadway, near Riverview, to locate a man identified as being responsible for an attemptedrobbery.

As the police officer approached the man, the suspect pulled a handgun and began firing at the officer. The officer was struck once in the upper arm, according to authorities. The officer was taken to Barnes Hospital where he was treated and released.

The injured officer is a 30-year-old man with four years on the force.

Officials say the gunman fled the shooting scene, and although officers did return fire, they cannot be certain whether the fleeing man was struck.
