St. Louis (KSDK) -- There's a major push to make sure children are properly secured in car seats.
Officials say motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children through age 12. They say proper restraint could reduce chances of fatality by 54 percent in toddlers.
Anew survey finds 20% of parents don't even read the manual for installing a child safety seat.
The biggest mistakes parents make are related to using the wrong slots for seat belts or leaving the seats too loose.
As part of National Child Passenger Safety Weekexperts in Illinois are providing hands-on inspections of child safety seats.
You can get yours inspected at one of 80 locations in the state.
