St. Louis (KSDK) - A St. Louis man is charged with robbing and kidnapping a female student from Washington University's Danforth Campus.
William James Cobbins, 22,of the 1600 block of Pine is being held in the St. Louis County Jail on $75,000 cash-only bond.
The victim told police Cobbins held her at knife-point in a parking garage last August and then forced her into her own car. She said Cobbins then made her drive toward the city and withdraw money from several ATMs along the way.
Washington University Police Chief Don Strom says surveillance images and physical evidence tie Cobbins to the crime and officers have increased patrols on campus since the attack.
Students say they've noticed.
"There are always officers in the parking garages, especially at night," said freshman Marilla Havens. "They're walking around and they greet you as you walk past."
"They do a really good job making sure the students feel safe even with the incidents that happened," added freshman Michelle Unger.
Chief Strom says violent crimes are rare on Wash U's campus and in his 13 years there he's never seen anything quite like the case involving Cobbins. But he says this case serves as a stark reminder that crime can happen anywhere at any time.
