SPRINGFIELD, MO (AP) - Drury University has selected the chancellor of Louisiana State University-Alexandria as its 17th president.

The university announced the appointment of David P. Manuel on Wednesday. He has been chancellor at LSU-Alexandria since June 2008 and was also dean of its business school and vice president of academic affairs at St. Mary's University at San Antonio, Texas

Manuel was one of two finalists for the presidency. The other was David Steele, dean of the College of Business and the Lucas Graduate School of Business at San Jose State University in California. Sixty-five candidates applied for the Drury job.

Current president Todd Parnel plans to retire next May.

Drury is a private, liberal arts school with an enrollment of about 1,600 students. LSU-A's enrollment is about 2,600.
