St. Louis (KSDK) --It wasn't that long ago that making bank transactions required a visit to your bank and that can be inconvenient and time consuming. Now, new technology in mobile banking can save you time and money. You can actually deposit checks, with nothing more than a smartphone.

The technology is called RDC or Remote Deposit Capture. It's been legal since 2004, but only now is it finding its way into some banking apps.

Federal law makes the digital image of a check legally acceptable for payment purposes, just like a traditional paper check. And with your bank app and the RDC feature, it's all very simple.

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when you are using your phone to make mobile deposits or transactions:

Don't Follow Links
Avoid Banking on Public Networks
Use Official Bank Apps
Be Careful of What You Download
Keep Track of Your Mobile Device

Some people may have doubts about the security of these apps, but banking experts say, relax, it's safer than you think.

Paying with a paper check is more of a risk because personal information is displayed. Anyone at any point could use that for the wrong reasons.

What are the Benefits of using RDC or mobile banking apps?

They're convenient, safe, save time and cost little to nothing.

A study of payment trends by McKinsey & Company estimated $1.18 trillion in person-to-person payments were made by check in 2009 and one can expect that number to change drastically in the next few years.
