Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Led by 15 points by Ben Averkamp, the Loyola- Chicago Ramblers downed the Toledo Rockets, 62-50, in a non-conference tilt at Gentile Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for the Ramblers (1-0) was Joe Crisman who added 10 points. Averkamp also cleared a game-high nine rebounds.
Julius Brown led the Rockets (0-1) with 15 points, although he shot just 1- of-5 from three points range and 6-of-16 from the floor overall in the process.
Both teams struggled from the field to start the game. Loyola made just 37.9 percent from the floor in the first half but still posted a 36-28 advantage at the break after outscoring the visitors at the charity stripe, 12-2.
The Ramblers bettered their shooting somewhat in the second half, improving to 40 percent. The Rockets continued have problems getting the ball through the hoop, making only 33.3 percent after intermission. Loyola pushed their advantage to as many as 22 in the second half as they cruised to victory.
The Ramblers outrebounded the Rockets, 43-30, and converted 13 offensive boards into 17 second-chance points.
