St. Louis (KSDK) - You can now take part in a St. Louis tradition that started more than 50 years ago.

Steinberg Skating Rink in Forest Park opened Friday morning.

It originally opened on November 11, 1957, and has been a St. Louis favorite ever since. It's a place where memories are made and families fall together.

Over the course of the years they've had to change a few things, and this year you'll see even more changes.

"We've added a whole new lighting system, added an extra café or beverage counter, new lockers. So we're kind of excited that we're opening finally," said Jeff Kasal with Steinberg Skating Rink.

The rink is the largest outdoor skating rink in the Midwest, and it's even open on Thanksgiving.

NewsChannel 5's Heidi Glaus spoke with a woman named Linda on Friday morning, who said she first came to the rink in third grade.

[Reporter]: "What do you remember about it?"

"Scared to death, I really was. I'm scared to death now I'm 64, I'm afraid I'm going to break a bone if I fall," said Linda

[Reporter]: "But it is about those memories?"

"Yes and the part about being here is being outside and being in Forest Park which is so fantastic now," said Linda.

If you don't want to skate, you can still enjoy the rink by sitting near the bonfire they usually have burning.
