ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - An O'Fallon, Illinois Marine who lost both of his legs in Afghanistan is home for the holidays.

Lance Corporal Chris Van Etten arrived at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport Tuesday afternoon.

The 21-year-old was seriously injured in a deadly IED explosion in June, and he's been recovering in San Diego.

While he still has a long road ahead of him, his mother says he's making remarkable progress.

"He's always had a very positive attitude. His attitude is I'm doing this I'm going to beat this and nobody is going to take that away from me," said his mother, Leigh Van Etten.

"I've gotten a lot farther than I honestly thought I was gonna be at this point in time. I'm walking without any sort of assistance. Went mono skiing a couple of weeks ago. Doing things I thought I would never do again, it's been nice," said Chris.

He will be home for three weeks, then heads back to San Diego where he will continue to work on his recovery.
