Flagstaff, AZ (Sports Network) - Four different Grizzlies scored 12 points as Montana overcame a halftime deficit to earn a 62-56 decision over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in a Big Sky Conference duel at Walkup Skydome.
Mathias Ward, Will Cherry, Jordan Gregory, and Keron Deshields tallied 12 points each for Montana (5-4, 1-0 Big Sky). Kareem Jamar just missed a double- double with totals of 10 points and nine rebounds.
Gabe Rogers netted a game-high 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor for NAU (4-6, 1-1). DeWayne Russell scored 12 points while Stallon Saldivar contributed eight rebounds and five assists.
The Lumberjacks managed to take a 33-29 lead into halftime after converting 13-of-28 field goal attempts with eight of the makes coming off of assists. Montana shot 43.5 percent from the floor in the opening half, but trailed after committing eight turnovers.
NAU cooled off after the break to shoot just 23.1 percent from the field, including a 2-of-10 mark from three-point range. The Grizzlies drained 44.8 percent of their field goal tries in the second half. Ward connected on a three-pointer to break a 53-53 tie with 4:44 left in regulation and put Montana up for good. The Lumberjacks managed to produce just three points over the final 5:49.
Montana enjoyed a 38-34 advantage in the rebounding battle and outscored NAU, 24-14, in the paint to start its conference season out with a victory.
