St. Louis (KSDK) -- Late Sunday night, shoppers were still scouring stores for the perfect presents thanks to anew holiday tradition: around-the-clock shopping.

If you walked into any Macy'sover theweekend - at any time -the doors were open. For the first time, the retailer as well as Toys 'R' Us tried out what's called 24-hour shopping - staying open since Friday morning.

"I drove so it was more convenient to wait until I got here so I wouldn't have to bring everything with me," explained Vanessa Graham of Dallas, Tx. "That's my excuse this year."

Fortunately for her and all the others, Macy's made a change to stay open all weekend to accommodate those who can budget their money, but maybe not their time.

"I expected it to be much, much worse," Graham said of the crowds.

Instead, what shelearned is that withextended hours, she could bypass peak times at the mall and all the mayhem.

"It's easier to get around in your car," said Ashley Eckhoff of O'Fallon, Mo. "You don't have to wait in line as much, so yeah, why not, if you're up, hey."

Hisexcuse is that his daughter needed to make some last-minute purchases.

"I'm glad to see this many people out," Eckhoff went on to say. "It means the economy is hopefully doing a little better because people have money to spend, so that's excellent for me."

"We really want to make sure we're open and accessible to our customers when it's convenient for them," added Robb Franklin, the store's manager.

Macy's at the St. Louis Galleria finally closed at midnight Sunday. Monday's hours are from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.
