St. Louis, MO (KSDK)- While most people were celebrating the new year out on the town, one mother spent the holiday at the hospital giving birth to a daughter. It was the perfect start to the new year following a year of tragedy.

Laura Tomlin and her husband Shane of Granite City are welcoming their first daughter "Kaylee" into the world.

The family of four became five on New Year's Day in fact, Kaylee was the first baby born at Barnes Jewish Hospital in the New Year.

It's hope desperately needed after the Tomlin family lost four loved ones last year including Shane's niece Krystal Moss, a young mother who was killed the day before Mother's Day. Krystal was a passenger in a car when the driver lost control, hitting a tree in Granite City. All three people in the car died.

Shane's mother passed away after battling lung cancer, a week later his grandfather passed away, and his younger brother was killed in June while he was driving to Indiana to pick up his wife and two young children when his car somehow lost control.

"2012 was rough for me and my family and you know what we ended 2012. 2013 is going to be a new year. It's a miracle," said Shane Tomlin.

"We've lost so many lives last year with this (baby) it's bringing new life in to our family," Said Laura Tomlin.

Laura is expected to be discharged from the hospital on Thursday. The Tomlin's plan to celebrate with a party.
