FLORISSANT, Mo. (KSDK) - Firefighters from three agencies responded to an apartment building fire overnight, containing the fire to a single unit, and the evacuation of residents from the entire building involved.

The fire was reported around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Delrado Apartments on Mescalero Court off Lindbergh Boulevard in Florissant.

A resident of the unit where the fire started woke to a smoke detector and quickly alerted other family members before fleeing to safety.

Officials say that same resident alerted other residents of the 12 unit building, eight of which were occupied at the time of the fire. Everyone got out safely according to fire officials.

The fire originated in the kitchen area of one unit, but the exact cause remains under investigation. A family of four, a parent and three children lived in the unit where the fire started.

American Red Cross officials are assisting all of the affected residents until they are allowed to return to their homes. Fire damage was contained to just a single unit, but smoke and water damage was reported throughout the building.
