ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The flu is causing increasing concern across the country as emergency rooms overflow.

The virus is widespread in most of the country including Illinois, but is still considered regional in Missouri.

The flu is typically an upper respiratory illness that comes on suddenly, causes a high fever, cough, muscle aches and fatigue.

Kay Quinn spoke to Dr. Ken Haller from SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center about the severity of the outbreak.
