STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. (KSDK) - A Ste. Genevieve church is hoping to recover missing relics of saints that were stolen in recent weeks.

Rev. Dennis Schmidt, a pastor at Ste. Genevieve Catholic Church, says nine relics went missing around Christmas.

The relics were present when the cleaning crew was preparing for Christmas masses, but when the crew returned to clean on January 4 they were missing.

A police report has been filed with the Ste. Genevieve Police Department.

"This is very sad. Relics are something belonging to, or connected with Our Lord or a saint, such as a portion of their bodies or a garment they wore. As such, these items are priceless to us as a faith community. " said Rev. Schmidt.

The items have been with the parish since the 1930s and 1940s and were brought back from several trips to Rome.

"For many Catholics, it is a great custom and honor to have relics in our church. Certainly, there is historical value here...but for us, the spiritual value is enormous. There is no replacement for them. That is why we pray that these holy items are returned to us," said Rev. Schmidt.

Anyone with information regarding the relics should contact the Ste. Genevieve Police Department.
